When a corrupt provincial town mistakes a penniless, smooth-talking clerk for a high-ranking government inspector, panic ensues. To save their own skins, local officials shower the imposter with bribes, wine, and flattery. Nikolai Gogol’s legendary satirical, farcical masterpiece is a wildly funny, razor-sharp takedown of political greed, systemic hypocrisy, and collective delusion. Our current climate is dominated by political spin and institutional mistrust – The Government Inspector has the capability to hold a mirror to our modern world, almost 200 years on – loosing none of its original bite.
